The definitions in nebosh igc syllabus as follows:

Incident:


“An event that includes all undesired circumstances and “ear misses” that has potential to cause accidents”.
e.g mechanical failure of crane during lifting operations.

Accident:


“An undesired or unwanted event which resulted in property damage and physical injury or damage to the environment”
e.g. falling of reversing vehicle in the excavation site.

Near Misses:


“An undesired event that could have resulted in injury or loss but did not.
e.g. a worker running down the stair slipped but regains balance with hand rails.

Hazard:


“Anything or something which has the potential to cause harm to humar or the environment”.
e.g. trailing cables on the walkway.

Risk :


“The likelihood that the harm will occur and the severity of the harm” or risk is the combinaiton of hazard, hazardous event and the consequences of the harm”.
e.g. a mobile elevated working platform operated near over head powerlines ( here the likelihood that contact with overhead powerlines and severity is worker getting electrocuted).

Dangeours Occurances:


“Incident where there is high potential to cause death and injury, these high potential incidents has to be reported to relevant authority (RIDDOR – Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurances Regulations 2013)
